The in person and telephone interviews went very well. Everybody that I spoke with was so positive and upbeat. The clinic has a nice set up and everybody seems so nice. The clinic has a need that I can fill and the company feels like a place where I can fit in.

Life will be interesting since I am not a commuter. I actually hate to commute. The good things about the job will outweigh the commute, I hope. Whenever things happen, I ask what lesson am I suppose to learn. This time the lesson is to trust God. The bishop said that God will send you where he wants you to be. I know that this is God directed because I don't feel scared or concerned that I have such a long commute. I'm looking at this as my mediation time. DH is going to drive at first until he thinks that I can handle the drive. He will also drive in bad weather. During the interview, we discussed bad weather and the company will pay for me to stay at a hotel close to the clinic. I'll keep a change of clothes in the car. My Kindle and Nook will keep me from being bored.

Not having a regular paycheck is a scary experience but everytime I start to feel panicky, I remember that I need to trust God and it will be okay. Lesson learned.

During this time, I was sorta working, I was going to a client's home three times a week but I charged her very, very little because her and her family are really nice. After I left my last job, they called and asked if I would come to help out until I got another job. It was easy work and I enjoyed spending time with her, took up less than 3 1/2 hours at a time but it was not enough to keep me going financially. I will miss taking care of her on a regular basis. I will still help out when my schedule works out.

The new job is exciting, it is pretty much the same thing that I was already doing. The new part of the job is the chance to teach patients with chronic kidney disease about kidney failure. I love to teach and the chance to teach pre-dialysis classes is one of my passions.

I will miss staying at home. I enjoyed having the time to cook and bake during the week. Now the crockpot will get a workout. DH thinks that he can cook, he is good at making grilled cheese and heating up in the microwave. He did try cooking one time but it ended when he made chili and added mushrooms. He got a little sensitive when I tried to explain that mushrooms don't belong in chili. DS can cook but I don't want to eat fried food all the time.

I have been sewing but I have a bunch of stuff that needs finishing. I don't start work for a couple of weeks so I need to finish up all of my UFO's. We will have a family meeting to discuss housekeeping since I do not plan to clean house on the weekends. My next post will be about the garments that I have been working on.

Life is never dull

God has good jokes but he never makes mistakes. I'm currently out of a job but am happily unemployed at the moment. When I lost my job, I had a moment for about 45 seconds but realized that leaving that job was a good thing. I decided to take time off before I started looking for another job. I am much more relaxed and my stress level is non-existent. I'm not bored. I have returned to church and started going to Bible study. I've spend more time with my mother and sisters in the last month than I have in months.

We rent (Thank God) a old rowhouse around the corner from my DM. This is really nice because I can go around the corner to freeload a meal. If one of us is out of something when we are cooking, it is cool that we can send around the corner and avoid going to the store. It is also cool because we can ride to church together. My baby sis talked me into making hoop earrings and feather earrings. Not making any money but DS is getting a lot of free jewelry out of the deal.

Crazy stuff is happening but I am not stressed about it.
1. Two weeks ago a shelf felled down in my sewing room. The screws pulled out from the wall and did a number on the plaster. It took two weeks and multiple reminders before DH put up a new shelf. The wall was so damaged that the shelf had to be moved higher.
2. Last week, DH was watching TV and noticed that the floor was wet. It was raining on the inside of the window running down the window blind. We called the management company but they are backed up because of all of the leaking roofs. DH is going to try to caulk the crack until they can get here to repair the damage.
3. Today, we went in Walmart and came outside and the truck was missing. DH forgot to put up the handicap sticker and they towed the truck away. It cost $225 to get the truck back.

Since my sewing room had turned into diaster land, I figured that it was a sign that I needed to give the room a good cleaning and re-organization. I've spend the last week slowly re-arranging everything. I'm 80% finished but I have a honey do list so hopefully the room will be finished by next weekend. This is a before picture.

Zipper front jacket

Pardon the wrinkles but I had been to church and lunch before I could get a picture taken. I could not figure out what to wear on Easter and the ugly prom dress cut into my sewing time. I made this jacket at the end of last year. I took me a while to finish it. I had leftover fabric so Saturday night, I made the skirt. The jacket is drafted from PMB and the fabric is a heavy doubleknit that came out of the stash. I ran out of time, so I didn't add the right shoulder pads and you can see the ones that I used sticking out of the collar. I'm still working on learning how to get the fit right with this program. This is the first jacket that I have finished and worn so it is getting better.

Easter 2011

I managed to get DH to go to church since I would have a hard time carrying DGD while wearing heels. Church was awesome and DGD kept us occupied. She is a good baby in church, sometimes she claps and tries to sing with the choir. She has been to church enough that she recognizes the bishop's voice and turns around to see him. Her head is on a swivel the entire time that she is awake. She kicked her shoes off at the beginning of service so we left them off. I'm luck that she usually manages to fall asleep during the sermon. After church, we went to lunch with DM and her sister.

It is hard to believe that she is almost a year old. It has been a fast year but she truly has brought a lot of joy to this family. Needless to say, she is spoiled rotten and very much loved, which is easy to do when you are the only baby and the only girl. She is learning to walk so we are starting on a new adventure.

Never again

I bumped my head when I thought that I was out of the prom dress business. After we found a dress, it turned out that her mother did not have any money to buy a dress. WTH!!!!. This is after I asked what were they expecting to spend on a dress. Needless to say, Grandma objected to spending $348 on the dress. So they came back to invade my sewing room again.

DM and Grandma worked on the top of the dress while I was at work. Big lesson learned, do not buy boning from Joann's. Second lesson, do not buy boning from Walmart. The boning was so cheap and flimsy that I had to use 2 pieces in some places. I used the fitting muslin for the underlining. I had DM sew a channel using bias tape around the top of the underlining. I ran a piece of elastic thru the casing to keep the dress from falling down. Another lesson learned, when you are barely a B cup do not buy cheap boning and wait until the last minute to make a dress. Can you tell that I'm ticked off about the boning.

Now they decide that they are going to change the skirt part of the dress. I used PMB to draft a new skirt because Grandma is dismayed that her "private parts" are going to be on display when she sits down in this dress or tries to get out of the limo. My cousin and her mother use my rotary cutter to cut out the skirt and the lining. IT WAS A HOT MESS. They decided that the skirt was too long so they cut it shorter. They cut off the hem.

I got roped into the mess when it was time to join the corset and the skirt. On the corset, they sewed the bottom of the outer fabric to the underlining. Now I have to make slits in the channels to slide the boning in place. I can't adjust the corset where it is slightly too loose because I be dammed if I going to rip stitches out of black fabric at night. Grandma draped the front of the skirt and I sewed the top to the bottom.

Now the fun starts, the original corset tied up the back. I told my mother that it would be a cold day in hell before I made those eyelets. I told them that I wanted to put the zipper in the side seam but it slipped their minds. Steam is rising as I struggle to sew a zipper into the back of this dress. I ended up redoing the zipper twice before it looked presentable. The inside of the dress is so bad that I used the pinking shears to try to make it look better. The dress is not short enough so I pin a deeper hem in the dress and give it to Grandma to finish the hem.

I was glad to see this dress leave my house. My sewing room was trashed, my rotary cutter blade has nicks. DM knows that I will never be pushed into sewing for somebody else again. Grandma and DM learned that sewing is not as easy as they thought. My cousin and everybody was happy with this dress. This reminds me of why I don't sew for other people.

Life changes

DGD lives with us during the week and takes up most of my time in the evening when DS is in school. She is such a joy to be with but at the same time helping to take care of her has kept me out of the sewing room. I love her but I do miss the downtime after work. Being a grandparent is much easier than being a parent. I have spoiled her rotten but she is learning what no and stop means. Next month she will be a year old and it has been a fast year.

I have been slowly sewing since November. I have been working on tweaking my pants and skirt patterns to add a full tummy adjustment so that I have breathing room when I sit down. The long winter and fitting issues has added to the sewing slowdown. After cleaning out the closet, it is bare and if I don't start sewing soon, I will be in big trouble.

Last Sunday, DH and I was driving DM and her sister to a birthday dinner. As we are going down the road, my aunt hands me a bag with fabric and patterns to make a prom dress for her DGD. The prom is April 15th. Both of them have decided that they are going to make this dress with my help. It has been at least 25 years since either of them touched a sewing machine. There is an assumption that it is okay to take over my sewing room and that I am free to help them after working 10 hours a day.

My cousin bought a black cheap satin and a silky printed polyester from Joanns. They bought patterns for a corset and a draped front skirt that they wanted combined into a dress. On Tuesday, I left muslin for them to make a trial garment. I got home from work and they had cut out the skirt pattern too small. They did manage to sew the corset together and only sewed one section on backwards. My cousin came and I tried to tell her that it would not look good but entitled childen only hear what they want. At the end of the night, DM left with a suit that I spend the last month working on and a skirt. But she agreed to buy DGD's Easter dress. This worked out perfect since I wasn't happy with the jacket.

Last night, I drafted a new skirt which was closer to what my cousin wanted. I tacked the black satin to my dressform and started draping the skirt. It was butt ugly so I stopped in my track and called them to come see the dress. I took a picture and showed everybody at work. Everybody agreed that it was butt ugly. I pulled out fabric from the stash and offered it to my cousin but nothing was what she wanted. She did not like any fabric on the internet. I helped her find a dress at Saks. So now I am out of making a butt ugly prom dress. This is the reason that I don't sew for other people.

Staycation update

This has a very peaceful and relaxing week. I have truly enjoyed myself. I did spend a fair amount of time in the sewing room. I didn't finished anything yet. I spend a lot of time doing nothing.

I worked on testing the new update. I had some problems with the program. I emailed WG. They were great at working on fixing the problem in less than 24 hours. Their customer support is awesome. I like the new styles that they added to the program and plan to try them out before the end of the year.

I made a princess seam v-neck top to check the fit. The neck is a little too wide, the neckline needed to be raised up a inch so it would be suitable for the workplace and I had to reduce the bust ease by one inch. Even with these issues, the top turned out nice. I didn't have the right color of thread for topstitching so I had to make a trip to Joann's. I made a wearable muslin of a pencil skirt and it just needs to be hemmed.

Cutting out fabric is not one of my favorite things so I took advantage of the time off to cut out new garments. So far, I have cut out 5 tops, hopefully a wearable jacket muslin, another pencil skirt and a pair of pants. The best thing is that all of the fabric came from the stash. I did order some knits this morning from an ebay vendor.

DGD has been here since Thursday and she keeps me busy so I haven't got much accomplished since she came. She is a good baby but sleep is not on her agenda. I just put her to sleep and she slept 15 minutes. DH just came home and it's his turn to babysit. He does well until she starts acting up because she is sleepy but fighting going to sleep. It took me two hours to get her settled down last night. I'm going to work on a wearable muslin for a coat that I drafted this morning.

November sewing staycation

My sewing has been at a standstill since I've been hung up on working on a pants pattern and making a new sloper. The pants seem to fit well enough that I can stop tweaking for now. I'll just add a one inch side seam to the pattern for insurance.

PMB released a new upgrade so I decided to re-check my measurements and make a new sloper. I've was a little suprised that I've gained a few inches. I had a moment for a few seconds, not happy. I played with my measurements in version four to get the fit that I wanted. I knew that they were off so I decided to start from scratch with new measurements. It took 3 muslins but I am happy with the final sloper. My sloper fits like a moulage so I have to think about ease decisions as I draft new patterns. I'm not fancy so I just need to tweak new styles as I pick different design options from Style Editor.

I'm on vacation for a week and it's my birthday so I have a date with my sewing machine. I am thinking about joining the Endless Combination contest on PR that starts tomorrow. I see this as a prelude to joining the Swap Contest starting at Stitcher's Guild on December 26th. I will wait to see before I join. I'm good at starting buy flunk at completing any contest. I'm not competitve when it comes to sewing. I want to sew so I'm not going to jinx myself.

I like the flow of sewing from one garment to the next. I have trouble sticking to a plan so I just make decisions as I work on a garment. I have a vague idea of what I want and what is missing from the closet so I have a general idea about where to start. I don't feel restricted and all of the garments work with others so I avoid making orphans.

I'm working mostly with blue and gray fabrics. I have a bunch of pre-washed fabric ready to sew. The stash has a supply of backup fabric if things don't work out. It feels good that I don't have to run out to buy fabric. It's sad but I love having a stash.

Muslin, coffee and mimosas will be my friends this week. I'm so excited about staying home, playing in my sewing room and reading. This is going to be a relaxing and stressfree week.

No, no, I don't want to go

Tomorrow, I leave for a 4 day trip Brentwood, Tenn. to attend a class to learn how to teach adults. I've been teaching adults for a long, long, time so the class is just a formality. I will be bored beyond belief while I'm sitting in class but the class is required if I want to train other nurses to teach patients. I volunteered to go but I'd rather be at home on a staycation. One of my goals is to develop a set of different style patterns that I can combine with new styles in the future. I have been collecting patterns and waiting to start working on them. Last night I cut out McCall's 6084. This pattern only has 3 pattern pieces.

I made several changes to the pattern. I cut the neck and shoulder pattern in a large and cut out the xxl size at the side seams. I shorten the jacket 2 inches because the original pattern is too long for the look that I want. Did a fake FBA by adding to the center front and tapering to the size. Curved the arm pattern piece to get rid of excess fabric. Did a round back adjustment which added a center back seam.

The pattern is suppose to be a 1 hour cardigan. After looking at the directions, I know that this pattern is going to take more than an hour in addition to the changes that I'll make in construction. The directions read like you are making a woven garment. No where does it mention a serger. I'm using the serger for all of the seams except the armholes. I cut some FOE in half to use to stabilize the front and neck area. I want this area to have some stretch. I'll use strips of knit interfacing to stablize the hems.

I'm using a navy blue knit from either Fabric.com or Fabricmart. This fabric has been sitting on the end of the cutting table for too long. It started talking to me last week. I was suppose to be working on some black garments but this fabric won out. Of course now I want to make blue pants when I really need black.

I have enough for a tank top, v neck top (already cut out) and another cardigan in a different style. I will use up all of this fabric so it doesn't go back in the stash.

I'm curious about how long it is going to take from start to finish to complete this garment. I'm sewing in spurts this week but I'm going to time myself. I hope to finish this and the tank top so I can take them on a business trip next week.

Butterick 5488

I'm working on the second version of this dress Butterick 5488 . I bought this pattern shortly during a recent sale. I love her dress. Her notes about the muslin saved me a lot of time. I started out knowing that I needed to add length. The changes that I made to this pattern:

added length in 3 areas -

front pattern piece -

added 5/8" just below the armhole

1.5" to waist area

2" to hip area

back pattern piece

I didn't add any extra lenght under the armhole. I just eased the front to the back.

added a 2" hem

pegged the hem by 1/2" on the side seams and the back seam.

I screwed up and turned the pleats into tucks on the first dress. Not quite the look that I wanted and you can see the stitching lines. The print is a lightweight poly that I got from Fabricmart earlier this year. It turned out really nice. I have worn the dress several times and it is really comfortable.

The second dress is another Fabricmart fabric. It is a rayon knit that feels heavenly. I have a bunch of this fabric left. I changed this dress by adding tucks to the front instead of pleats.

The tucks were time consuming and a couple of times, I wondered what made me do this when I'm suppose to be sewing simple. This dress has not been worn because after it was done, I decided that I didn't want to wear as much black this summer. I need to wash it to remove the chalk marks.

Altering patterns

I have been thinking about computer pattern drafting patterns a lot this weekend. PMB has a new update for the program coming out in October. They have been unveiling the program on the forums Wild Ginger - 15 Weeks to Wild They are adding new styles and making some nice changes. I've had this program for a minute and think that I finallly have fixed most of my fitting issues. I'm excited about the changes and will be happy to play with the upgrade. Yesterday, I played with the download for Bernina My Label. I like the program but have a granddaughter that I would rather spend the money on.

I'm really hard to fit and need a lot of changes to get commercial patterns to fit. I started thinking about the changes that I need so I decided to make a list.

Neck and shoulder adjustments. I cut out patterns at least two sizes smaller along the shoulder and neck down to the armhole. Sometimes I need a forward shoulder adjustment.

Bust adjustments - Full bust adjustment and lower the bust dart. Make a petite adjustment between the shoulder and the bust.

Armscye adjustments - Narrow and raise the armholes for a closer fit to the body. Take out excess ease under the arms. Sometimes I need to narrow the biceps.

Make a rounded back adjustment and a broad back adjustment.

For pants and skirts - I need to increase the waist, take out the hip curve, make a large abdomen adjustment and a flat seat adjustment. I have to peg the sides and backs of all skirts.

I need to add length to every pattern piece usually divided into two-three different areas.

It is a lot of work to get patterns to fit. For a long time, I stopped sewing out of frustration because nothing fit. It has taken me two years to figure out what changes are needed. I have learning a lot over the last two years and think that I can make things that fit most of the time......

I have had a love/hate relationship with PMB. The learning curve is steep and there are times when I wanted to throw the computer out the window. I made peace with the basic program when I realized that it is just a computerized way of hand drafting a pattern. I make the same decisions that I would if I was drafting a pattern using a basic sloper. I have to make all of the design decisions. How wide should the collar be? what shape? How does one change impact another? All in all, I think that it is worth the price of admission because I don't have to make fit adjustments for each pattern.

I've learned to make muslins and I keep a supply of muslin in the sewing room. I'm working on developing a set of TNT designs that I can use as basic slopers.

Sorting and purging

My sister has lost weight and need some clothes that fit. We are close to the same size but I'm am taller and more busty. She was the inspiration to clean out my closet two weeks ago. I did it in two stages. I pulled out the things that I knew that I wouldn't wear again. I waited a day and then I went back over the remaining clothes. I asked myself if this is a garment that I would pull out first when I was getting dressed. If the answer was no, it was out. Not much has remained. I need to replace a lot of clothes.

I clean out my main closet at least once a year. This is the first year that I got rid of the "one day, I might wear it" clothes. I did keep a few of the "maybe" clothes to see if they get worn over the winter. I still need to sort out the clothes packed away.

A couple of things need to be altered. There are some advantages to having fewer clothes.

It is easier to see what I wear on a daily basis. The clothes that are left behind reminded me that I mainly wear knit tops and pants for work.

I know that I wear a lot of somber clothes and need some pops of color.

I have a big need for a couple of suits and dressier clothes for church.

I need a black cardigan as soon as possible.

Next on the agenda is to figure out the sewing line up for the next few months.

June cardigan and tank top

I made a cardigan in that I made in June. It is based on a cardigan from http://www.lafayette148.com/ . The original cardigan is made from a crinkled linen fabric. Since I was working with a knit, I decided to try it. I drafted a zipper front cardigan pattern from PMB. I cut a strip of fabric 5 inches wide along the length of the fabric. I sewed a casing along both sides of the fabric. Next I made a drawstrip and eased it thru both sides of the overlay. I cut off the drawstring closest to the body of the cardigan. I layed the gathered strip along the sides and back of the cardigan and topstitched them together. It is heavy so it will not be worn until the weather gets cool.

I worked on a tank top based on a top from the June 2010 Burda mag. I drafted a one shoulder top. I cut a 10 wide strip of knit and finished the side seams. I gathered the fabric down to a 4 inch wide which I attached to the front and back. The next time, I will cut the strip a little shorter so that it is under some tension. The strip on the current top is a little loose.

It's Sewing time

The plans for this weekend including finishing two dresses and trying a new design for a top. The first version looked promising so I am going to cut a second front so I can add more fullness across the gathers. The front was gathered zigzagging across elastic thread. I'm using a black rayon knit which is great to work with but hates heat. I think that I added a facing to the center panel to counteract the weight of the knit. I used a binding for the rest of the neckline.

Our new girl

A month ago, God gave us a new addition to the family. I'm working on tweaking a couple of pants patterns for a better fit. I drafted one pattern from PMB. I've been working on this pattern for a long, long time and it is close to being a TNT. The only thing that this pattern needs is a full abdomen adjustment. Most fitting books recommend that you add extra fabric to the sides of the waist but I don't need the extra fabric on the sides. I need it across the front center of the pants for sitting room.

I found the right adjustment by looking at a bunch of different fitting books. Then I watched a video at Power Sewing. It showed adding the extra width along the front center of the pattern. This video alone made the fees worth while. I have struggling to get this part of the pattern right. I'm going to change it a little bit by adding the extra fabric with short darts and easing a small amount of fabric across the front.

The second pattern is Louise Cutting One Seams.

I made four changes to the original pattern.

I added 3.5" in length. I added the extra length in two places.

I copied the back crotch extension from my PMB pattern and added it to the LC back pattern piece.

Of course I had to add some extra width to the pattern.

I raised the back pattern height by .75" to prevent the pants from dipping down in the back.

The pattern and her directions are awesome. The pants go together like a dream. When I get this pattern right, it will take less than 3 hours from cutting out the pattern to hemming the pants. The first pair turned out so well that I finished them. I made a second pair from a light gray silk/bamboo fabric from A Fabric Place. This fabric was a dream to work with except for the raveling. This fabric is so soft. I took out some width with the second pair of pants. The only change in construction that I made was to serger finish the top and bottom of the pattern pieces while they were still flat fabric pieces.

I like both pairs of pants. There is a little bit too much fabric across the front and sides of the pants but they are wearable. I going to retrace the original pattern. Make all of the changes except use less width. I'm going to use the same front adjustment on this pattern. I might reduce the back crotch extension by .25"

My goal is to end up with two patterns for pants that can work with different fabrics. The PMB pattern will be used for mediumweight or stiffer fabrics. The One Seams will be used for fabrics that are soft. I'm so close to the pattern that I want.

Staycation

I just returned to work after a 5 day staycation. I was tired and overworked. Stress level way too high, so it was time to take off.

I enjoyed 5 days of hanging around the house w/o any set plans. Time off was relaxing and I finally had time to think. I need more work/life balance. Things are out of balance and I feel it. I realized that I had not enjoy sewing most of the winter. Too many things didn't turn out and I got frustrated. I spent too much time trying new things and playing with getting a better fit. I lost the enjoyment of sewing and my mojo along the way.

I feel like I need to start over with the way that I approach sewing including this blog. I deleted almost all of my posts and will probably delete the rest of them except for the post about the snow. I need a fresh start.

My summer wardrobe is pretty bare. I need a whole new wardrobe. My plan is the 3 S's:

Sew Realistic - Sew for the life that I have. As much as I love skirts - pants are easier for work. Save the skirts and dresses for the weekend.

Sew Simple - I need simple garments because I need a lot of clothes.

Shop the stash - I think that I have all the fabric that I need for now. I've gotten better at not buying every fabric that I want. I love buying fabric. I say no a lot more now. I'm going to try to only buy fabric that sings to me. I can't promise that I would stick to a fabric diet because it would be broken in no time. Fabricmart does me in all the time.

This post may be the re-start of my blog or I may delete it in time. I'm snowed in at home and very happy to be here. For too many years, I had to work and as a manager make the decision to open or close the clinic. There is a lot of agony in trying to decide whether to risk the life of the staff or the patients. As much as I like working in dialysis, I hate it in the snow. I'm so happy that I changed jobs and don't have that level of responsibility anymore.

It was so nice this morning to sit in the sewing room and watch the falling snow.
